August 15 - August 22, 2008:

*Northwest 34th Street resurfacing work continues. Motorists may enocunter daytime shoulder and or bike lane closures for drainage and sidewalk work. Nighttime lane closures will be in place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. for signal and roadway work through the week. Vehicles will be entering and leaving the roadway as sidewalk and drainage work is done during the day. A grooved road surface will be in place for the next 2-3weeks, motorcyclists and bicylists should use caution.

* Southwest Second Avenue (SR 26A) may have weekday daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for concrete repairs. Please be aware of vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.

Safe Travel Tips
Motorists driving through the construction zone play a major role in safety on any project. All the maintenance of traffic put forth by the contractor can be wiped out by a single careless motorist. According to accident reports, most accidents in the construction zone are a result of driver error or carelessness. For your safety, the safety of your fellow motorists, and workers on the project, please utilize the following guidelines:
  • Pay attention to all construction signs, and don't rubberneck in work zones.
  • Reduce speed to posted limits, and remember in Florida, speeding fines are double in construction zones when workers are present.
  • Watch for slow moving construction vehicles entering and exiting the highway.
  • Don't stop in the travel lanes. If you must stop, pull completely off the road and out of traffic. Always pull off to the outside of the roadway and never into the median.
  • Allow a safe distance between your vehicle and others.
  • If it is raining, turn your headlights on so other vehicles can see you.
  • Beware of workers in construction work areas. They are working hard to improve the highway.

    Here are some statistics for work zones in Florida:

  • Over the five year period from 1997-2001, the number of persons killed in motor vehicle crashes in Florida work zones has gone from lows of 22 in 1999 and 2000 to a high of 37 in 2001, with an annual average of 27 work zone deaths.
  • Over the five year period from 1997 to 2001, the number of persons injured in motor vehicle crashes in Florida work zones has ranged from 2,133 in 2000 to 2,986 in 2001, with an annual average of 2,475.
  • From 1997-2001, the number of motor vehicle crashes in Florida work zones has ranged from 2,045 in 2000 to 2,943 in 2001, with an annual average of 2,339.

    State Road 100, 231 and 238 Traffic Impacts
    August 16 - August 22, 2008: No lane closures expected as crews work to replace the traffic signals and add asphalt to make the turns wider at the intersections of State Road 100 and 238 and at State Road 121 and 231 in Lake Butler. Crews will be adding wheelchair accessible ramps at the side street intersections between State Roads 100 and 121. Also, work on the drainage pipes is occurring prior to the resurfacing of the roadway between the Reception and Medical Center and State Road 100.
