State Road 16 Resurfacing Begins in Clay County

7/14/2010 - Work is scheduled to begin Monday, July 19 to resurface State Road (S.R.) 16, from U.S. 17 to the Shands Bridge in Clay County, according to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Crews will remove the existing asphalt and place two new layers of asphalt on the three-mile project, which was last resurfaced in 1997. In addition to resurfacing:

  • The right turn lane from westbound S.R. 16 onto northbound U.S. 17 will be extended 250-feet.
  • East- and westbound left turn lanes will be added and the median opening widened at Bunker Avenue.
  • Two median crossovers just east of Reynolds Boulevard will be removed. The existing flashing signal at Reynolds Boulevard will be replaced with upgraded equipment.
  • Side street entrances will be reconstructed at Rio Vista Circle, Kelsey Road, Owens Road, Thomas Road, Clark Road and the trail heads to the nature preserve.

Lane closures for paving are expected to begin in late July and will be scheduled at night between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. to reduce the impact to the 14,300 motorists traveling this section of S.R. 16 on average every day. During paving, all traffic will be shifted onto one side of the road with flaggers directing traffic through a single lane. Daytime lane closures, when necessary, are allowed only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

APAC-Southeast Inc. of Jacksonville was hired by FDOT to construct the project at a cost of $1.6 million and is expected to complete the work in five months, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
