Counties: St. Johns
Cities: St. Augustine
Overview
Project Began: June 9, 2008
Expected Completion: Winter 2008
Project Description

The eastbound King Street detour is tentatively scheduled for September 24.

All eastbound King Street traffic at U.S. 1 will be detoured north on U.S. 1, east on West Castillo Drive, south on South Castillo Drive, west on Cathedral Place, south on Cordova Street and back to King Street, just less than two miles. This detour will be in place so construction crews can realign the turn lane at the southeast corner of the intersection and replace the traffic signal. This detour will last approximately six weeks.

J.B. Coxwell Contracting Inc. will construct the $1.1 million project which includes:

-Adding a new traffic signal at King Street and Malaga Street/Sebastian Harbor Drive

-Removing the planter and Shell station sign and reconfiguring the sidewalk at the corner of King Street and Malaga Street for placement of the signal

-Reconfiguring the dedicated turn lanes at King Street and U.S. 1

-Replacing the existing signal and sidewalk at King Street and U.S. 1

-Replacing and adding pedestrian signals with new signals that have a crossing time countdown display

-Replacing drainage pipes to meet current standards at both intersections

-Adding wheelchair accessible ramps at both intersections

-Making minor modifications to the median at Daniels Street two blocks south of King Street on U.S. 1

The first of two detours began August 5 on westbound King Street at the U.S. 1 intersection near Broudys.

The second detour is for eastbound traffic. Construction at the southeast corner of King Street and U.S. 1 near the Seabreeze Car Wash will require that eastbound King Street be completely closed.

At the intersection of King Street and Malaga Street, traffic shifts will occur in both directions with the center lane used as the travel lane at times.
